What does festive attire mean?

Festive attire means cocktail attire with a bit of celebration in it: a dressy outfit in velvet, satin, sequins, metallics or a rich holiday color. It shows up on invitations from late November to New Year's, and it's really asking one thing: come ready to have fun. The rest is deciding which version of you is walking in.

The rules

The short answer

Dress to cocktail level, then add one festive element: a fabric (velvet, satin, lamé), some shine (sequins, metallic thread, a beaded detail) or a color (deep red, emerald, gold, midnight blue). One is enough.

Dress, set or trousers

All three work. A velvet dress, a satin two-piece set, or tailored trousers with a sequin or metallic top are equally festive. Pick whichever you'll actually move and dance in.

How far to take it

Festive means celebratory, not themed. Skip novelty sweaters, Santa hats and light-up anything unless the invitation says "ugly sweater". If you're unsure, let your accessories carry the sparkle and keep the outfit itself simple.

Festive vs. cocktail vs. black tie

Cocktail is the base: knee-length to midi, dressy fabric. Festive is cocktail plus a seasonal spark. Black tie is a step up: floor-length and formal. If an invitation says "festive black tie", that means a gown with some holiday color or shine.

At work vs. with friends

At a work party, keep hemlines and necklines office-friendly and let the fabric do the celebrating. At a friend's party you have more room: a sequin mini, a bold color, a big earring.

Shoes, bag, layers

Heels or dressy flats in satin, velvet or metallic, a small evening bag, and a coat you're happy to arrive in. December parties start outdoors.

How to search for one

Name the party, the venue and the one festive thing you want. "Emerald velvet midi for a work holiday party in a restaurant, sleeves, under $180" works. "Festive outfit" gets you everything.

Common questions

What does festive attire mean on an invitation?

Cocktail attire with a holiday or celebratory touch: a dressy outfit in velvet, satin, sequins, metallics or a rich seasonal color.

Is festive attire formal?

It's semi-formal, about the same level as cocktail. It isn't black tie unless the invitation says "festive black tie".

Can I wear pants to a festive attire party?

Yes. Tailored or wide-leg trousers with a sequin, satin or metallic top are as festive as a dress.

Can I wear black to a festive attire party?

Yes. Make it festive with the fabric or the details: black velvet, a metallic shoe, sparkly earrings.

Does festive attire mean an ugly Christmas sweater?

No. That's its own dress code and the invitation will say so. Festive attire means dressy.

What colors count as festive?

Deep red, emerald, gold, silver, burgundy, midnight blue and plum. Any color in velvet or satin reads festive too.
